Councils aren’t known for being fast-moving, but some of their comms teams buck that stereotype.
Last week Gisborne declared itself the ‘world’s best place for digital nomads’ in a tourism campaign. It follows the Government’s recent change to allow travellers to work remotely while in New Zealand.
It achieved front-page coverage in Stuff. It is reminiscent of Invercargill Council’s self-deprecating social media jokes which have become a favourite of journalists.
These media stunts work because they latch on to a current news topic, such as the Paris Olympics. This grabs attention of the social media audience first, and journalists follow.
